Founded in 1890, the St. Aloysius Parish community has continued its mission of faith for over a century in Spokane, Wash., near Gonzaga University. The parish has served both the town and the university well over the years. Although they are separate entities, parish and university communities interact to bring a rich diversity of cultures, interests, talents and resources to life at St. Al’s.
The present St. Aloysius Church was dedicated in 1911 and has the largest seating capacity among Catholic churches in Spokane, able to accommodate 1,100 worshipers. The interior features include oak woodwork, altars and ambo of matching Italian marble and a true pipe organ. On occasion, the church provides a richly spiritual setting for musical programs, such as the Gonzaga University Chorale’s annual Christmas Candlelight Concert.
St. Aloysius has a vibrant social ministry program, which emphasizes education and formation of the parish community. It organizes parishioners into five ministries: charity and direct service; legislative advocacy; global solidarity; caring for creation; and empowerment, which encourages, trains and supports parishioners in volunteer leadership positions.
The parish also operates St. Aloysius Elementary School, an integral part of the Jesuit parish community. Its mission is to develop the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical capacities of each child. The school’s goal is to graduate students who will be leaders in action, modeled on Christ.
We strive to promote justice, enhance faith, and find God in all things.
We welcome partners in mission who wish to volunteer at our ministries or learn more about Ignatian spirituality.
