California and Oregon Provinces to Blend Websites

With the California and Oregon provinces coming together to form a new province in July, 2017, the websites of the two provinces will be blended into one this summer, giving the provinces’ collective audience a streamlined and more efficient delivery of news and events of the new province, to be named Jesuits West.

The planning for the new province has been in the works for many years as part of the Society of Jesus’s worldwide province realignment plan. In the United States, this means that while there were formerly 10 provinces, there will be four – West, Central and Southern, Eastern, and Midwest – by 2020.

The coming together of the California and Oregon provinces represents a return to the roots of the two provinces which separated from a single province in 1932. As a new, larger province, Jesuits West will have a geographic territory that includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The new province will maintain the same hallmarks for which the Jesuits have come to be recognized, including work in education, Ignatian Spirituality, parishes, retreat centers, and social ministries to the poor and disadvantaged.

“One thing we want to make sure that people understand is that we will continue our work in service to the people of God,” said Fr. Mike Weiler, SJ, California Province provincial. “We expect that this change in our province boundaries will be seamless to the people we serve. Jesuits are not going away. Yes, there are fewer of us than a generation ago, but we remain committed to continuing the work of our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola.”

"We have been preparing very carefully to form the new province of Jesuits West. In most ways, this new, larger province makes us better,” said Oregon Province Provincial Fr. Scott Santarosa, SJ, former pastor of Dolores Mission Parish in Los Angeles, who will become provincial of Jesuits West on July 1, 2017. “I believe that at the sector levels, among them the parish, high school, and university levels, we are getting stronger. Our Jesuits and lay partners have enjoyed the expanded numbers of quality people with whom they can collaborate in these ministries. People are excited for Jesuits West to become official next year, but the truth is it's already a reality."

For the past few years, Jesuits from both provinces have been missioned to leadership roles in the other province. And, for many years, the provinces have operated a joint Novitiate and Formation program for the education and training of future Jesuit priests and brothers.

The blended website will present full lists of Jesuits West ministries, news, events, Jesuit obituaries, as well as news from other Jesuit works around the world and updates on initiatives of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope.

October 9, 2018 - Father Robert Joseph Schlim, SJ, longtime teacher in Spokane schools, died at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California, October 3, 2017. He was 90 years of age, 68 years a Jesuit, and 56 years a priest.

October 2, 2018 - A new video series narrated by Fr. Chris Calderón, SJ, explains each step of Jesuit formation: novitiate, studies, regency, theology and tertianship.

September 30, 2018 - Jesuit Scholastics studying Philosophy spend their first summer on service immersion programs. The rural villages of Alakanuk, Bethel and Newtok in western Alaska were the frontier destinations for Shane Liesegang, SJ, John Meyers, SJ, Jason McCreery, SJ, Raymond Parcon, SJ, and James Millikan, SJ. Their mission was to contribute their talents wherever needed.

September 17, 2018 - Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal of St. Francis Xavier School, received Loyola University of Chicago’s 2018 Damen Award from the Institute of Pastoral Studies on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

September 12, 2018 - Father Michael J. Mandala, SJ, emeritus president of Verbum Dei High School, Los Angeles, died September 9, 2018 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California. He suffered from pancreatic cancer. He was 71 years of age and had been a member of the Jesuit Order for 54 years, 41 years a priest.

September 5, 2018 - Father John J. (“Hex”) Kindall, SJ, longtime high school teacher/principal and pastor in schools and parishes throughout the Pacific Northwest, died August 25, 2018 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California. He was 91 years of age, a Jesuit for 74 years, and 61 years a priest.
