Father William Charles Carroll, SJ, entered into God’s peace October 24, 2017 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He was 81 and had been a member of the Society of Jesus for 58 years, 48 years a priest.
Born in Los Angeles May 3, 1936, young “Bill” graduated from Loyola High School (1954) and Loyola University of Los Angeles (BS, biology, 1958) and after one year at Creighton University’s medical school, entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Los Gatos in 1959. His Jesuit studies took him to Spokane (BA, philosophy, Gonzaga, 1964), Alma College (MTS, theology, Santa Clara University, 1971), as well as to Loyola University, Baltimore, (MS, 1988, PhD in pastoral counseling, 1992), and Bangalore, India, for ascetical theology.
A teacher of Latin and English at Loyola High School, Los Angeles before his ordination, Fr. Carroll’s later ministry was primarily in direct pastoral and clinical counseling. He directed retreats and was involved in the Marriage Encounter program in Los Altos and San Jose, served as chaplain at Valley Medical Center and O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, and was a counselor at Southdown, Ontario, Canada, a residential center for priests and religious with addiction or mental health issues.
From 1994 to 2000, he was professor of psychology and counseling education at Canisius College, Buffalo, and served as a clinician in the counseling center. After a year as parochial vicar at Old St. Joseph’s Church, Philadelphia, Fr. Carroll came to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, and did ministry in local parishes and rest homes.
Father Carroll is predeceased by his parents John Lyman Carroll and Monica Auger Carroll. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Carroll Absey and her husband Don, of Calabasas, Calif., and several nephews and nieces and grand-nephews and nieces in Southern California.

October 9, 2018 - Father Robert Joseph Schlim, SJ, longtime teacher in Spokane schools, died at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California, October 3, 2017. He was 90 years of age, 68 years a Jesuit, and 56 years a priest.
September 30, 2018 - Jesuit Scholastics studying Philosophy spend their first summer on service immersion programs. The rural villages of Alakanuk, Bethel and Newtok in western Alaska were the frontier destinations for Shane Liesegang, SJ, John Meyers, SJ, Jason McCreery, SJ, Raymond Parcon, SJ, and James Millikan, SJ. Their mission was to contribute their talents wherever needed.

September 12, 2018 - Father Michael J. Mandala, SJ, emeritus president of Verbum Dei High School, Los Angeles, died September 9, 2018 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California. He suffered from pancreatic cancer. He was 71 years of age and had been a member of the Jesuit Order for 54 years, 41 years a priest.
September 5, 2018 - Father John J. (“Hex”) Kindall, SJ, longtime high school teacher/principal and pastor in schools and parishes throughout the Pacific Northwest, died August 25, 2018 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California. He was 91 years of age, a Jesuit for 74 years, and 61 years a priest.
