A Pope’s Jesuit Life
1958: At age 21, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis)
enters the Society of Jesus.
1960: Bergoglio pronounces his first vows as a Jesuit.
1969: After the typical decade-long period of Jesuit
formation, Bergoglio is ordained a priest.
1973: He takes his final vows as a Jesuit, in April of
that year. Three months later, he is named provincial (top leader) of the
Society of Jesus in Argentina.
1992: He is ordained auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires.
1998: Bergoglio is appointed Archbishop of Buenos Aires,
the first Jesuit to hold that position.
2001: Pope John Paul II makes him a cardinal.
2013: Bergoglio becomes the first Jesuit ever elected
pope. He takes the name “Francis.”

January 9, 2019 — Fr. Scott Santarosa, SJ, Provincial of Jesuits West, has appointed Annie Fox as the Province’s Provincial Assistant for Social Ministry Organizing.
