Fr. Fred Green Wins Peruvian Peace Prize

Father Frederick J. Green, S.J. has been named the winner of the 2013 Peruvian Ministry for Women and Vulnerable Populations Peace Prize. Born in Hawaii, Fr. Green, 91, was an American aviation pilot during the Second World War, and arrived in Peru in 1959. Fr Green won the prize in the civil society category, under the sub-category of Natural Person.

Since his arrival in Peru, Fr. Green has devoted himself to the social apostolate, mainly in the field of formation, always focusing on the less fortunate. He is the founder of two colleges in Tacna (Cristo Rey and Miguel Pro). He developed a program of voluntary summer camps, aimed at supporting groups which are financially disadvantaged. He also developed various aid programs for students who had limited means.

Father Green is considered by many generations of students not only as a teacher and a friend, but also as a true guide who has accompanied them along the way to adulthood. Today, as spiritual director at the Miguel Pro College in Tacna, he continues his spiritual and ecumenical commitments.
