More than 1,200 well-wishers attended a January 27 celebration of the 80th birthday of Father Gerald T. Wade, SJ, chancellor, alumnus, and former president of Bellarmine College Preparatory (San Jose).
Speakers at the on-campus celebration included Father Richard Cobb, SJ, longtime friend and colleague; Father Edward Reese, SJ, former principal of Bellarmine and current president of St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco; and David Romero, SJ, a Jesuit novice who traveled from Boston College to entertain the crowd with his comedic impression of Fr. Wade. Bellarmine President Chris Meyercord introduced a tribute video that was also streamed into other campus venues to accommodate overflow crowds.
During the San Jose City Council meeting on his birthday, December 12, Fr. Wade received a commendation from Mayor Sam Liccardo, a Bellarmine alumnus. The campus celebration included presentations of additional commendations from Dominic Caserta, Santa Clara City councilmember; and Dave Cortese, Santa Clara County supervisor; both of whom are Bellarmine alumni.
Among the guests at the celebration were many Bellarmine alumni whose graduation years spanned eight decades, going as far back as the 1940s.
In lieu of gifts, guests were encouraged to contribute to the Wade Family Financial Aid Endowment.
This year marks Fr. Wade's 63rd anniversary as a member of the Society of Jesus, which he entered upon graduating from Bellarmine in 1955.
